Helpers in the Darkness

Mr. Rogers
"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world."
(From Patricia: A question asked by various spiritual writers and teachers is:  "How do you keep your heart open in hell?". Given the recent sad and horrifying events, I see again what a test that is. When real life hits hard, you sometimes find your belief system shaken. For example, I saw how shallow was my pacifism. I wanted to hit back, or whatever it takes to stop these madmen, who, perhaps worst of all, claim that murder is God's will. But hitting back doesn't stop the violence; it merely suppresses it. As the Buddha said, Hatred is never ended through hatred; only by love is hatred ended. As a Christian, when I see the insanity of such blind hatred, I remember what Jesus must have seen in his last hours and his response, and am encouraged and amazed.)
