God's Mark on Us

Paul Williams
"Fifteen hundred years ago, St. Augustine said: ‘The thought of you stirs [man] so deeply that he cannot be content unless he praises you, because you made us for yourself and our hearts find no peace until they rest in you.’
"Why does God chase us like that? Why will he not let us go? ‘Do not be afraid. I am with you. I have called you by your name. You are mine,’ as the hymn says it. Is it a result in some way of baptism? Baptism has been explained to me as like a tattoo, visible not to us perhaps but very visible to God. Perhaps it can be removed, but only by drastic and painful surgery. God seeks those with His tattoo."
