Carried Along

Alan Watts
"To have faith is to trust yourself to the water. When you swim you don’t grab hold of the water, because if you do you will sink and drowned. Instead, you relax, and float."
1001 Pearls of Spiritual Wisdom, Kim Lim, Editor

(From Patricia: The desire to ‘grab’ at God is a sure way to come up with empty hands. Or as Merton said, to tranquilize oneself with religious ideas or platitudes, though it may temporarily separate you from feeling the pain, does not help you grow in the knowledge of God or yourself. I found that I had to stop expressing anger about the election outcome (even if still feeling it) and turn to the demands of the present moment, to pray, to help my neighbor, and to wait in the darkness of painful feelings, until the light comes. The whole situation made me think of Holy Saturday, the day after Jesus was crucified. Everything is silent and dark,  and we know nothing yet of the Resurrection. PM)
