"John of the Cross is very clear about the particular experiences that herald the beginning and ending of each of his four dark nights, which experiences are major turning points in the journey.… 
"Today it seems everybody is using the term “Dark Night” as a label for any kind of downer they experience – boy loses girl, woman loses husband – you name it. None of this, of course, is what the saint meant by his Dark Night. This is why it is more important than ever to be specific about the experiences John of the Cross is talking about, otherwise the term “Dark Night” can refer to any kind of disturbing experience.
