Coming Back into the "World"

Ralph Waldo Emerson
“It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion, it is easy in solitude to live after our own, but the great man is he who, in the midst of the world, keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”
Quoted in Desert Call Magazine

[Few of us think of ourselves as that "great (hu)man" but this is where 'practice' comes in. I do see people trying to remember the "independence of solitude" - perhaps a beautiful photo of nature on the desktop, peaceful music on their listening device, or, as I tried, keeping a mala (rosary) in the pocket so that when I touched it, it reminded to take a breath and offer the moment to God, who always waits in perfect silence and with whom we are always alone.]
