The Truth of Prayer

Fr. Donald Haggerty
“It is a simple truth of prayer that our soul will pass more lightly, more securely into the hiding places of God when we do not seek to overcome our blindness in silent prayer.”
Contemplative  Provocations, chapter: Last Thoughts

["...do not seek to overcome [your] blindness in silent prayer." What Fr. Haggerty says here is a profound and subtle truth written by someone who clearly knows God in the silence within. Sitting before God with nothing to offer but our simple self, whatever shape it is in, sitting there, wanting to pray, waiting in faith – that is prayer. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, teaching mantra practice, said, “As soon as you notice you have dropped the mantra, you are back on the mantra”. Similarly, as soon as you want to pray, you are praying; your heart turns to God in that desire. The ‘intention’ to pray, the desire, the will-to-God is the source of that. Do not “seek to overcome” blindness in prayer; only stop, come, sit, pray.]
