Christianity is Never Easy

Sister Ruth Burrows

"Earlier generations had certainties; we have none. It is not only that we can blow ourselves up at any time but on the religious plane itself, is anything held certain? What can we be sure of? It is very hard for sensitive people to live with this acute insecurity and there is a longing to grasp at something tangibly certain: they want proof that God is there, in this world, with them. They want to feel that they really matter to God.

"Testimonies, marvelous answers to prayer, miracles, intense feelings of God’s presence, the support of others in these things, all help to provide this sustaining sense of the reality of God. This is most understandable and one can sympathize. Still, it is to shirk the cross. Christianity can never be easy. "
