Trust God's Love

Sister Ruth Burrows

“We are afraid to trust ourselves to love. We do not really believe in God’s groundless, unmerited, eternal love for us. This must be the rock, the solid rock beneath us. God loves me, not because I am good but because he is good. …Somehow we have got it into our head, and even when it has gone from our head it is still written into our flesh, that we have to make God loves us. We have to make ourselves beautiful in order to be acceptable to God.”

Guidelines for Mystical Prayer, page 62

[When we read someone who writes: “love God,”, and we feel we don’t ‘know God’ so therefore how can we love something we don’t know—we can recognize the desire to know God, even the fear that says you are not getting closer, not doing it right. That urge is itself, God drawing us. I had a meditation teacher many years ago who told us, “As soon as you realize you are off the mantra, you are on the mantra”. The same truth applies here, as soon as you feel you are failing in your efforts, you are back on track.]
