James and I didn't have to go anywhere to find what we needed. It was right where we were, just waiting to be found on the very same streets we were trying to escape. Of course, I'm not talking merely about [food]. I'm talking about joy. Just a little taste. Joy is what we were needing most. It's what we had been hoping to buy. And in the end, that's exactly what we got, for free, by embracing life as it was; by not resenting it for being hard, and demanding it be different; by just being in it, and feeling it, and living it as best we could.
Next time you need a little more joy in your life, here's what I propose. Stop what you're doing, take a deep breath, lift the lid on the dumpster in which you've been burying your pain and troubles, and dig into it. At first the stink will be a little much to take, but if you keep searching, you might be surprised at the treasure beneath the trash.
