The mystics remain cautious about spiritual phenomena even when they seem valid. They advise us not to be hasty in judging unusual experiences, but to be patient in testing them by results. If such experiences cultivate peace, forgiveness and steadiness of character manifested in personal relations, we should cautiously affirm them. Otherwise there is much to fear, for too much love of spiritual favors can lead to a kind of licentiousness which decays into vanity and hysteria, or just into vacancy.
