Alan Watts
The ego humbles itself in order to be exalted, and by that very motive annihilates its humility. This is simply the ancient problem of grace stated in a slightly different way. Obviously one must have God’s grace in order to love God, and we are told that this grace is freely offered to all; it has only to be accepted. But why do I want to accept it? The answer is inevitably that I want it because of self-love, that I accept it for a motive that denies it.
The Supreme Identity, chapter: Realization
St Maximilian Kolbe
Cut short all thoughts of pride. Willingly accept every opportunity for humbling yourself. Don't be offended at a harsh word, and imperious tone of voice, not being respected as much as you would like.
