The New Age has become a way of fending off old age. Perhaps also we are impressed by the Dalai Lama, or other Buddhists we meet. Everyone likes Tibetans. However, I am not sure if all this is a basis for real conversion. To become a Buddhist because it lacks the perceived problems of Christianity is a weak foundation for Buddhist practice.
I now think I was a Buddhist by default, not by conviction. Eventually I returned to see whether the problems I feared in Christianity were not really the problems I thought they were.
The Unexpected Way
I've found spiritual philosophies to be imperfect, probably because our minds are imperfect. The question for me about which tradition to follow is, does it contribute to inner peace? Interestingly, I can answer yes to both Christianity and Buddhism.
ReplyDeleteInner peace, while a state of great value, is not the final goal of either path. To come to that perhaps walking two paths is not the way. I speak as someone who tried it.
DeleteThanks for your thoughtful reply. How would you describe the final goal?
ReplyDeleteGod reveals Itself and all doubt and practice ends.
