Saint Bernard of Clairvaux
Delight yourself in Wisdom, which is Christ, beyond all else, in order that worldly glory or fleshly pleasures may not withdraw you from him; and let Truth, which is Christ, enlighten you, so that you may not be led away by the spirit of falsehood and error. That you may not be overcome by adversities, let the power of God, which is Christ, strengthen you. Let charity render your zeal ardent; let Wisdom rule and direct it; let constancy make it enduring. Let it be free from lukewarmness, not timid, nor wanting in discretion.
Sermon 20, quoted in Spiritual Companions by Peter Toon
[This quote again reminds us how important it is not to confuse the man “Jesus” with Christ. We are not transformed into the man Jesus – we cannot be transformed into another human being, no matter how holy or one-of-a-kind he may be. This leaves us with the important question – a paraphrase of Scripture and perhaps a Christian ‘koan’: “But you, what do you say that I am?” Matt 16:15]
