James Martin SJ
Joy brackets Jesus' life on earth. At the beginning of his life, after the Annunciation, Mary goes to visit Elizabeth. What happens? John the Baptist leaps for joy in Elizabeth's womb. And what does Mary do? She sing a song of praise.
"My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior."
At the end of Jesus' life, after the Resurrection, the Risen Christ is grilling some fish on the shore. Peter sees him from the boat and leaps into the water for joy. Joy also kicks off Jesus' public ministry. What is traditionally called his first miracle happens at Cana, where Jesus miraculously turns water into wine, thus making sure that the party can continue. Joy is an essential element of the life and ministry of Jesus. So should it be for any of his followers.
