Venerable Thomas à Kempis
When someone directs harsh and unkind words against you, you are given to drink the chalice of the Lord as medicine for your soul. Remain silent and drink of the cup of salvation without complaint, for the Lord will be your protection in life and in death. God will not forget you. There is nothing more admirable than to remain silent and patient, for in this way you curb the mouth of him who utters evil against you, and at the same time you follow the example of Christ, who remained silent before Pilate, though much false testimony had been brought against him. You are no better than God, who for your sake, endured scourging, ridicule, and death at the hands of the wicked.
A man does not know how good and virtuous he actually is until harassed by his enemies. Christ has many friends who claim that they love him and are willing to share a meal with him, but there are only a few who are willing to abstain with him.
Bountiful Goodness
